Back in 2012 Google launched an augmented reality game called Ingress that was developed by Niantic Labs. It was an interesting experiment and surprisingly the game proved to be something of a cult hit where a quick search on Google+ shows that engagement does not appear to be slowing down, so much so that a report from The Information (paywall; via Android Police) has suggested that Google is thinking about taking the game and turning it into a TV show.
Google is said to have partnered up with Sean Daniel Co. to make the show that will be based on the game and that they are currently interviewing candidates that could serve as its showrunner. Now we’re sure some of you guys are thinking that this sounds like Google could be making the move into TV/movies, kind of like what Amazon and Netflix have done in terms of creating original content.
However that does not appear to be the case. Instead, the TV show is meant to just offer up a deeper extension into the game and to provide a more “intimate” connection with its players. It certainly sounds like a lot to invest just to give players a more “intimate” connection, but we suppose we do see the potential of such a movie. We’re not sure what the final product might look like but safe to say we’re excited if it is true. Would you watch a TV show based on Ingress?
