Virtual reality is all the rage these days. Even companies like Facebook have thrown their hat in the ring, as well as companies like Samsung and LG, making a point that virtual reality isn’t just limited to gaming. Last week even Valve showed off its new VR headset that it has built in collaboration with HTC. Google has these ambitions as well and it’s not limiting its VR efforts to the experimental cardboard.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Google has put a dedicated team of engineers to work on a version of Android that’s meant purely for virtual reality hardware and software. Google has already brought its Android platform to wearable devices in the form of Android Wear.
The report claims, citing two people who are familiar with the project, that Google has diverted talent and resources to bring Android to the realm of virtual reality. This would be an offshoot of Android just like Android Wear, Android Auto and Android TV.
Google is claimed to have assigned as many as ten engineers to this project. Details on this are slim at this point in time. Google itself has neither confirmed nor denied that it is working on something like this.
Given all of the hype these days regarding virtual reality it wouldn’t be surprising to find out that Google wants to play a big part in this arena.
