If you have been reading the interviews with Jony Ive, you might have heard about Apple Watch and how one of the versions that Apple will be selling is a gold-plated version of the watch which we can only imagine will be rather pricey. That being said a recent report from The Wall Street Journal has revealed that platinum could be Apple’s next luxury material of choice.
Now before you go off and think that platinum bands and finishes will be offered with the current Apple Watch, think again. The report claims that this material would most probably be offered in the next-gen Apple Watch, if at all because the report also states that Apple has “studied” platinum watch casings, and whether or not they decide to go with it remains to be seen, and we guess would probably have to depend on the success of the Apple Watch to begin with.
As it stands the Apple Watch is made from aluminum for the regular/standard models, while those who are after a slightly more luxurious offering can opt for the 18-karat gold version. As for straps, Apple is expected to offer rubber and leather straps but as for a gold-plated strap, Apple has yet to announce it but John Gruber of Daring Fireball speculates that a gold-plated strap could be announced later today.
Apple will be making an announcement later today at 10AM PT which will be presumably about the Apple Watch’s availability as well as sharing additional details about the wearable. The watch itself is expected to begin shipping in April, at least according to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook.
