Amazon’s strategy for original content is to release a handful of pilots and then let viewers decide which of them they would like to see picked up for a full series run. In the previous pilot season Amazon introduced the Ridley Scott-produced The Man in the High Castle which is based on an alternate history novel by Philip K. Dick. The company has announced today that it has been picked up for a full series run apart from four other titles that move from pilot to series.
Among the titles that Amazon has picked is the dark comedy called Mad Dogs, The New Yorker Presents documentary series and two shows for children titled Just Add Magic and The Stinky & Dirty Show.
The last pilot season was released in January 2014 and 13 pilots were presented to the public. They were all available for streaming online absolutely free. Amazon does this to gauge response and then decide which pilots are worthy enough to warrant an investment that’ll see them through an entire season.
The Man in the High Castle envisages an alternate scenario following World War II. It depicts America being colonized by Germany and Japan as Axis powers win the second World War. Amazon says that this has actually been its most watched pilot ever.
All of the new shows that Amazon has picked up for full series will be available for Prime subscribers by the end of this year.
