A report from The Wall Street Journal (via MacRumors) has revealed that medical device manufacturer DexCom has recently announced over the weekend that they will be releasing an app for the Apple Watch. The app in question will have the ability for the wearable to track the wearer’s glucose levels and display the information on their wrists.
As it stands the FDA considers glucose monitors to be Class III medical devices, meaning that in terms of regulatory scrutiny, they are at the highest level. However it seems that DexCom has managed to convince the FDA to change their course with regards to health apps. Now before you get too excited, the app will only work if you use one of DexCom’s monitors.
The app basically syncs with the monitors that uses a hair’s width sensor located under the user’s skin, meaning that you will need to have the sensor implanted before the app is of any use to you. This also means that the app might not necessarily be for everyone and might only be of interest to those who might need to monitor their glucose levels, such as diabetics.
