A drone that actually captures selfies? Now this is definitely something different, don’t you think so? Known as the Zano, this is a micro drone that happens to be a flying prototype with a due date of it being marketed some time next summer. Right now, the Zano micro drone is being demonstrated on Kickstarter, where Torquing Group, the engineering group behind it, intends to raise £125,000 so that it can enter production.
Just how small is the Zano micro drone? Well, for starters, it measures 2.5” x 2.5” in size, and will tip the scales at an incredibly lightweight 55 grams, sporting a 5MP on-board HD video camera in addition to a digital microphone, while there is also optical image stabilizing technology that is thrown into the mix as well. Video resolution has been capped at 720p due to initial bandwidth restrictions, although the on-board camera is able to capture 1080p video at 60 fps. To put it simply, one can look forward to better quality footage should this ability be unlocked in a future system update.
In the pipeline at the moment includes the building of both iOS and Android apps, as well as getting in touch with regulators so that they can pick up UAC guidelines to make sure that the drone’s capabilities remain well within the confines of the law.
