There has been talk in the past about whether Apple would eventually one day unify both their iOS and OS X platforms. One has been designed for mobile devices while one has been designed for computers, and given that OS X has slowly been getting iOS features, it does not seem like quite a stretch of the imagination.
While it remains to be seen if that will ever happen, a new report from DigiTimes (via 9to5Mac) has suggested that Apple could instead settle for a happy middle – a dual booting iPad Pro which will run both OS X and iOS. Now we have heard rumors that Apple could be working on a 12.9-inch iPad called the iPad Pro.
Given its size, we can only imagine that Apple will want to position it against the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 which has been billed by Microsoft as the answer to the MacBook Air. With the introduction of OS X, it would no doubt bring more productivity to the tablet and thus allow it to compete against the Surface Pro 3.
DigiTimes claims that there will be two versions of the iPad Pro – one will run iOS only, while the other will run both iOS and OS X. Now these are rather wild claims as iOS and its apps have been designed for the ARM architecture, while OS X and its apps have typically relied on Intel for their chipsets for the past few years.
This means that Apple would have to either develop iOS for x86 chips, or design OS X for ARM, neither of which seem likely especially given DigiTimes’ track record. However to be fair, DigiTimes claims that it is unclear if Apple will be going ahead with their 2-in-1 device. In any case like we said, this is a rather wild claim but for the sake of hypothesizing, what do you guys think of an Apple product that can dual boot iOS and OS X? Yay or nay?
