The flash from our smartphone cameras tend to be pretty harsh. This is because unlike dedicated flash units and proper photography setups, they just fire directly onto the subject itself, thus resulting in a harsh and washed out photo where the highlights are blown out. That being said if you wanted better flash results from your smartphone, the Nova flash unit could be worth your consideration.
As you can see in the image above, the Nova flash unit is a standalone flash that is about the size of a credit card. It is also a wireless flash unit that pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, so by using the wireless flash, photographers will be able to bounce light off the ceiling, reflectors, or angle it in such a way that the light does on shine directly onto the subject itself.
The flash will also come with an accompanying app that will allow photographers to choose from three temperature-adjusted white lights, so there will be different types of flashes that you can use depending on the effect that you’re trying to create. There are 40 points of lights diffused behind the white panel on the flash unit, so you rest assured knowing your subjects will be illuminated properly.
Will it be as bright/effective as an actual flash unit and setup? Well that’s hard to say, but if you’re on the go and you don’t have a DSLR, but want good quality photos in the dark, then the Nova might be worth checking out. It is priced at $59.99 and is available from bitemyapple.co.
