Earlier today, BlackBerry announced that they would be giving their T-Mobile customers $100 off if they were interested in getting a new handset from the official BlackBerry store. Perhaps this is like a token of apology for inconveniencing T-Mobile customers who will no longer be able to purchase BlackBerry phones from the carrier in the future as the licensing agreement between both companies are coming to an end.
However it looks like T-Mobile has plans of their own and in a recent blog post by T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, it seems that the carrier will be willing to give BlackBerry customers $100 in credit towards any new phone as a token of appreciation, although Legere notes that this credit can also be applied towards the BlackBerry phones in their portfolio like the BlackBerry Q10 and the BlackBerry Z10.
According to Legere, “In fact, to show our appreciation for all current consumers so passionate and loyal to all things BlackBerry, we’re offering a $100 credit toward any new device, including the BlackBerry Q10 or the Z10. And this offer is good through the end of the year. So you can take your time.”
It sounds like T-Mobile’s way of appeasing BlackBerry customers, but at the same time we can’t help but think it’s another way for the carrier to get more customers to switch handsets. The last time T-Mobile offered a similar deal, it resulted in BlackBerry phones being traded in for something else.
In any case perhaps it is the customer that walks away the winner because if you want a new phone from eiter T-Mobile or BlackBerry, both companies are willing to shave $100 off the price tag, so it really comes down to a matter of personal preference.
