Pornography is a topic where much has been said about it, and this time around, we have a proposed clamp down on pornography with demand by a media regulator for porn sites to have an age check law in place before one is able to access that site. According to the results of a survey that was conducted by The Authority for Television On Demand (Atvod), these very same results were used as debating “ammunition” against underage access of pornography in the UK.
As at press time, UK based industry players have to implement such an age verification feature, although providers who happen to be based outside of the UK will not fall under such restrictions. Atvod has estimated that just one of these websites was visited by 112,000 boys in the UK aged between 12 and 17 years old throughout an entire month.
The survey’s findings can be quoted, “Atvod added that the survey probably underestimated the scale of the issue since smartphone and tablet use was not included in the figures.”
Mindgeek, a sub-contractor based in Luxembourg that has a bunch of adult websites under their management claims that this is a futile effort since such responsibility should fall under the purview of the parents, and while Atvod agreed to this statement, they suggested that this is not the only solution since age verification can be conducted through provisional credit card submission, and having that mandatory process could prove to be of help.
