Word on the street has it that Amazon could be planning a set top box of their own which would compete against devices like Roku and Apple TV. Given that Amazon currently offers video content, we guess it would not be a complete stretch of the imagination to think that they might release a product dedicated to it, right?
However the question we have to ask is when will Amazon arrive with a set top box of their own? Well according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, they are claiming that come first week of April, we can expect to hear an announcement by Amazon. Considering that we’re already in the third week of March, it seems that we won’t have to wait much longer to see if the rumors pan out.
As it stands not much is known about Amazon’s set top box for now, except that it could be similar to the Google Chromecast and that it might even feature video game streaming that would allow gamers to stream PC games onto their TV. In fact just last week there was a leaked photo of an alleged game controler which presumably would be used in conjunction with the set top box and its game streaming features.
Given that Amazon isn’t exactly known for gaming, it will be interesting to see how the rumored gaming function of its set top box will fare against more traditional consoles, and also how it will fare against the upcoming Steam Machines that are also planning an invasion into the living room space.
Either way if the reports are to be believed and that Amazon could be announcing something in early April, we guess we won’t have to wait too long to see what Amazon might have in store for us. In the meantime are there users out there who might be interested in seeing what Amazon could be bringing to the table?
