So we’ve seen how Amazon and UPS are looking into ways to use drones to deliver packages in the future. Not only is this a more efficient method since you could make same-day deliveries, but it’s pretty awesome as well. Thinking outside the box and building off Amazon’s idea is a microbrewery called Lakemaid who thought that it would be a great idea to deliver beer to ice fishers using drones as well (see video above), at least until the FAA caught wind of their plans and ultimately put it on ice (no pun intended).
The FAA is currently in the process of reviewing their policies which might be revised come next year regarding use of drones for commercial practices, which is why they had to tell Lakemaid to put a hold on their plans for now. According to the beer company’s president, Jack Supple, “They think it’s a great idea, though they’re telling me to stop.” The idea behind it is pretty awesome as those out on the lake ice fishing might not want to leave their spots for a while.
Also due to the cold conditions, it might not be ideal to have someone walk out there and personally deliver beer as well, so having someone to pilot the drone while in the safety and comfort of an office/vehicle could be a better idea. Apart from beer, the drones could also be used to deliver food and supplies. In any case hopefully the FAA will rethink their policies, but then again we’re not sure if everyone would be on board the idea of a drone-filled future.
